hi all
i have an 03 merc 25 2 stroke short shaft, manual start.
it is not an issue for me to pull start it, but i would like to have my batteries getting a charge while underway, specifally for a spotlight which works way better when hooked to a charging battery, vs a battery that has been charged at home.

is there a kit out there that includes everything i need? i just spent 2 hours on google and could not find one. i dont need the starter or anything like that. just the stuff to grab current from the outboard and send it to the battery.

also, if anyone knows what a typical price would be that would be great, and a link! THANKS!

Re: Merc 25(m) want to add charging system

okay so after an hour or so more of searching this forum, i found this...

http://http://rainboat.com/forusewithlightingcoilstheseprovidedccurrentforrecharginga12voltbattery5.aspx

will this kit work AND include everything?

i was also able to find this....

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/11744/116.cfm

http://http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/11744/116.cfm

im thinking the second one would be more likely to have what is needed.... which one would you all choose?

i am assuming i will need some 10-12ga wire to run from motor to battery, anything else???

thanks for your insight
do i need any other parts?

That would be the charging kit, the one from crowly marine that is. The only thing is that it puts out more of a trickle charge to the battery and with that being said....it will will raise the battery level with nothing running, probably maintain the battery level while running lights, and with running your lights, and a spotlight, I think it will take more power than whats coming in. Even if you run just the spotlight it might still kill the battery. Those things take alot of current. At least if it does you can kill the light and keep charging.

good to hear.

so the one from crowley... do i need ANYTHING else?

im assuming i will have to pull the manual starter system and flywheel. i will go to the mechanic and see if i can borrow their flywheel puller for $10 bucks.

i heard somewhere i need a lighting kit? i have no clue what that is or if it is needed.

three reasons i would like this done.
1. for one hour MAX to get to areas when duck hunting i will use the q-beam
2. trolling offshore to keep the livewell flowing at a high rate(750gph pump)
3. charge the Trolling motor when doing 4-5 day trips in the everglades(we run WOT in between camping spots which usually are about 2 hours away. lots of exploring, i usually have to take 2 different fully charged batteries so i can use the TM and livewell.

the third reason i only do about 2-4 trips like that a year, but shedding 60# off a gheenoe and 25hp motor would be very nice.

i just hope the "kit" from crowley includes everything (anyone know if it includes instuctions?)

regards

Thats pretty much everything. Goes from stator to rectifier, from rectifier to battery. Theres not a whole lot of parts in the system, and all the mounting surfaces are already on your block. Order the kit, it even comes with the nuts and bolts to properly mount everything. It is a "complete" kit.
