Is this common?

http://www.wxii12.com/news/22487153/detail.html

Apparently they banned sales of alcohol, and the transport - sale - or possession of firearms during the weekends snow storm.

Why would they do this?

What do you use for anti-freeze if you can't get alcohol?

And how do you get your firearms home to lock them up if you are stranded in the snow?

Around here, a snow day is a good opportunity to head out to the woods to do some small game hunting, then stop for a sandwich and a beer on the way home.

Does anyone else find this a bit odd, or Orwellian?

I've never heard of a ban on driving, either. Sounds a little silly to declare a state of emergency for snow in North Carolina, even without the weirdness of the bans. I guess one man's emergency is another man's flurry.

?By law, statue 14-288.7 automatically went into effect. And that law which goes into effect when there?s a state of emergency prohibits the transportation, purchase sale and possession of firearms other than on one's own premises.?

i think this was totally misinterpreted. to me it only refers to firearms.

No, When a state of emergency (in NC) is declared- that statue is AUTOMATICALLY in effect (it DOES ban driving, alcohol sales, and apparently firearms transport). I've been thru 2 "declared state of emergencies in my county (due to floods...I am on a local Rescue squad), and NORMALLY the statue is not enforced (the town's businesses were actually more busy while the "state of emergency" was in effect than a normal day). Now once, During about a 3 hour period on one flood, we did have to Ban access into the county, and anyone on the roads (other than Law enforcement, rescue, ems, ect.) was "escorted" home or to a shelter, but that was a short lived time-frame of the "state of emergency" (the county had actually declared it for about 3 days).

Legally the ban is correct, however NORMALLY it really isn't enforced (unless the **** has REALLY hit the fan).

State of emergency around here normally associated with heavy winter storm. They said only neccessary traveling and emergency vehicles are allowed to be on the road. Peoples still drive and I'm sure some have got into trouble but have never heard of anyone got in trouble for it. Haven't heard of the alcohol and firearm thing though.

i have been asked to leave a state highway twice in Wis over the years.

first time the trooper escorted me to a motel, second time a few years later they just told me to get off the highway because the roads were closed to travel. i was close enough to my house to go back home.

Here during a state of emergency, like this past weekend, they heavily recommend not driving, however, there is no law saying you can't. They can however ban driving at their discretion.

They should be more concerned with morons who do not clean their cars off before jumping on the roads and highways, that is just plain stupid disregard for your fellow humans.

Same here. They recommend no unnecessary travel during a snowstorm. Usually, that's when the bars fill up(not speaking from experience). The worse weather, the more people seem to venture out. If it gets too bad, businesses will just shut down on their own...... They will shut down major freeways...

States of Emergency cover a lot more than snowstorms. Some of the included rules/laws seem inappropriate for some situations but are absolutely required for others.

There is little difference between undisciplined freedom and anarchy.

Snow is bad, but running out of liquor is a state of emergency. One way to keep drunks off the streets though.

I would think JB, as a way to prevent anarchy, the powers that be, would have different levels of the "state of emergency."

And I think that everyone has overlooked that this happened on SUPERBOWL SUNDAY, with all the parties and social events that go with it. That had to really hurt some of the local establishments.
