Hi! I have a Mercury 85 motor that I'm told is a 1978. It has a blue stripe on the engine cover. When I was working on the engine I noticed the starter solenoid was dated 1976. I want to buy a manual for repairs but want to make sure I have the right year for the motor. Anything I can look at that will tell me for sure? Thanks for your help in advance!

Here you go.

?The serial number was on a plate riveted to the swivel bracket above and between the clamp screws..
?Serial numbers 3865695 thru 4092964 were 1974 models.
?Serial numbers 4092965 thru 4366801 were 1975 models.
?Serial numbers 4366802 thru 4590511 were 1976 models.

The 85 or 850 was made from 1973 to 1977. The 1973-1975 have a distributer ignition and single coil and the 1976-77 use a power pack and 4 coils. Both have the large connecter that plugs into side of lower splash cowling, just make sure you get the manual for the correct ignition as internals and lower unit are the same.

Check on the port side of the crank case just under the flywheel
the serial number should be stamped there. Just to make sure the
powerhead and mount braket match.
