Distributor problems 1974 merc l-6

It looks like distributors are a hot topic lately so i will throw this one in there.I am in the process of replacing the trigger on my engine.and i found one on e-bay complete would it be advisable to change the whole unit or just replace the trigger & do i have to go through the timing process.any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

Waht i meant by found one comlpete is the distributor and wires,Anybody!

I would try just the trigger first to see if it works

Thanks for the input,thats is what i origianally intended to do then the lightbulb went off!!Two heads are better than 1.Thanks again
