After being told the price to replace the stator on my 1998 Johnson 115, I have decided to do it myself.....all I need is some help from you guys. What am I up against? I have the tools to remove the flywheel but am not educated in timing an outboard or any tricks of the trade about the stator. Can someone lend me a hand? Thanks. Mark

Replacing the stator doesn't change the timing. Do you have an OEM shop manual?

You will need a harmonic balancer puller with Gr8 nuts and washers, torque wrench (for reinstalling the flywheel) and a means of holding the flywheel for loosening/tightening the nut holding it.

I have a large flywheel puller. Do I need an actual harmonic balancer puller? And you mention a specific type of nut. Is this a metric thread - do I ask for it exactly as you have it written? And I do have an OEM manual. Thanks, Mark

I think that motor has a five-bolt flywheel. I would recomend a service manual to guide you thru. You will need to check the timing, afterward.

Dont need a puller for that motor , undo the 5 bolts on top of the flywheel and it will come straight off the hub, be carefull when taking it off as the magnets are V strong , you will have to take the optical ignition timing disck of the top first but this is on a key so it cant go back on wrong . stator should be held down by 3 or 4 screws , undo remove unplug and put the new one on , 30 min job .

If you can spin tools and follow instructions this is an easy repair no more than two hours including taking your time, learning and being extra cautious.

just be careful how you hold the flywheel and not to damage the magnets. A great help would be to price a new flywheel before you start. Then you will be very very careful with it. And just be careful with all the plastic parts, in my opinion this is where yamaha comes in way better than OMC. OMC plastic parts just seem to break too easy to me. Just had to replace the optical timing wheel on my motor, and still have several plastic parts that are broken, but not unusable.

Re: Replacing stator on 115 Ocean Runner

Thanks for all the advice. Just to make sure before I purchase a new stator...can a stator be considered "bad" even if the motor will start but run horribly? I don't want to be a "parts replacer" and continue doing so until I have built a new motor.

Oh, one other thing the marina told me was that the carbs need to be rebuilt. I have rebuilt many automobile carbs in the 70's but marine stuff freaks me out. What advice can you give me?

Thanks,
Mark

OK its sound as if we are getting ahead of our selfs here, why do you think the stator is bad ? what checks have the workshop done to the stator to assume this is the problem? it could e a problem with the optical sensor also as the stators on these motors were pretty good .

1st port of call is to do a resistance check on the stator and confirm if it is bad or not , you can get the values from most workshop manuals , there are two circuits on it , one for charging and one to power the CDI for ignition.

If you give a bit of history first it may be the guys on here can save you some cash , if it is running rough i would service the carbs first and then worry about the stator . Marine carbs are the same as any other 2 stroke carb but 1st thing buy a decent workshop manual .

you need a spark gap tester from local auto parts store ($10) and a DVA adapter ($40) you can google it and find them online. and a good multi meter to test your stator.
Here is the CDI guide that will help you troubleshoot it. Keep these tools , you will use them often and become the neighborhood go to guy.

Thanks guys. I actually have a day off this weekend so I will see what I can accomplish in reading up on the manual. I'll get back to you soon for further guidance. Have a great day. Mark
