I have a 1987 70 HP Mercury ? I fished for about 4 hours and ran my boat around the bay and it ran fine. When I tried to run the boat up on my trailer it died and would not start. This is the problem with this motor. I will run good all day and all of a sudden it will still turn over, but will not fire off. What does this sound like?

Re: Mercury Blues

Welcome to iboats!

Sounds like you were out of gas!

I will move this to the Mercury Outboard section.

Re: Mercury Blues

It could be any number of issues, carburator needs adjusting or cleaning, fuel pump could be acting up(cleaning), or reed valves need checking

Re: Mercury Blues

Take a timing light or spark checker with you the next time boating, when problem occurs attach the light or check and see if you have spark. If no spark you have a ignition problem, with what you describe I will say its a stator failing.
