aftermarket seal???

resealing lower gearcase 1960 johnson 40hp. new propeller seal from sierra is different from original seal. should it be installed the same way as original witch doesn't look right. spring facing gearcase no metal covering spring original seal does .Or install with spring facing toward propeller meaning spring will get wet and rust?but that looks the way they want you to install it. hopefully someone has run into this problem. any ideas

The spring faces the oil (toward the gearcase). If you had bought an OEM seal it probably would have been different than the original also.

Thanks F.R. Im glad you understood what Im talking about. Hard to install because you don't have a flat surface of the seal . hope I don't break the spring
