this boat has the system check Tach, when ignition is turned on, all 4 lights come on, then go off, and the "check engine" light comes back on, and stays on.
It runs perfectly fine.
Any idea where to start the diagnosis??

The "Check Engine" alarm is a restriction in the gasoline supply to the motor. It is set off by a vacuum sensor next to the OMS pump. However, your motor is a V4 right? I do not think they were equipped with that sensor in 1996. In that case, the sensor wire is shorting to ground. Look for some missing insulation or chafe. The wire will be tan with a trace color, and should be near the OMS pump.

If I remember correctly it will be in a 6 or 8 pin connector and color will be tan with orange trace.

Ok, I do not have the fuel restriction
vacum swith, so where exactly does the
wire go? Is it just dead ended into the
8 pin connector?

Pin 8 is for the horn, pin 7 is for the check engine light.

"Pin 8, used to activate the warning horn, supplies a ground to the horn circuit when any other warning circuit (pins 4 thru 7) is grounded"

Ok, checked all connection, checked for
chaffing, none found. I totally removed the
tan/orange wire, and pin from the connector
at the tach.
Light is still on.

pin # 7 is the one I completley removed from the deutze connector at the tach. I am thinking I have a circuit failure in the tach itself.

Re: 1996 Johnson 130 "Check Engine Light"

Because the electronics to turn on the various warning lights are built inside the gauge, then most likely the gauge is faulty. This assumes that there isn't a short in the sensor wiring.
