1983-70hp johnson. Filled the lower unit up with new fluid. When I tilt it all the way some leaks out. Is that normal? I have not had it on the water yet and do not want to do so if it is leaking.

Re: lower unit leak?

It would be helpful to know where it is leaking "from". There are several places it can leak from. 1) behind the propeller, 2) the drain plug, 3) the fill plug. When you drain and fill the lower unit the gaskets or O-ring should be replaced. If it's leaking from the prop area the lower unit needs to be resealed.

If it is gear oil leaking then you have a leak that needs fixing or you will get water in there.

But are you sure it is not just partly burnt oil from the fuel

It is the brand new lower unit oil that I just put there. It is not leaking from the prop or the drain and fill holes but comming from some where at the top. I guess tomorrow I will take the lower unit off and have a look see. Are these seals hard to replace?

When I say the top, I mean the top of the lower unit where it joins the mid-section.
