I was getting alot of alarms so I brought it into the marina and my mechanic told me that the computer was going bad and needed a new one. He told me the cost would be 800 to 1000. Does this diagnosis sound right? Can I buy the computer on my own and install it? Thanks for all your help.

The service manual explains the testing that is required to determine that the engine computer (ecu) is bad.

Re: 1999 Johnson Ficht 175 Computer

Delume..... Seahorse is right ..... DFI Technologies in Alabama is the only show in Town. Both my 175 2000 Ficht motors need/got a DFI visit. Here is the deal. Its a sensor or your EMM. Secondly if your injectors got 500 to 1000 hours on them they are dirty and when they start to fail they will fail rich. So I assume your idle is a bit rough and your engine isn't as crisp as it used to be. It's really easy to remove your emm and 6 injectors. Mail them off to DFI with a check. If anything its only your injectors and a 1999 model needs cleaning, coefficients loaded and software updated on the emm. I'll guess that your engine unexplainably stalls and needs to be shut down and restarted???? You need the new Emm software and clean injectors at your engines age anyway ... Call DFI and they will talk you through your teardown and box it all up.

BTY, Your stuff will barely fit in those postal service fixed rate boxes. Your stuff will come back and you'll think you have a zero hour motor.
