I have 1978 16'l x 5'w Larson jon boat with a 1986 Mercury outboard with side console and quicksiler side mounted control unit. I have front and rear casting decks and my dream is to put in a small (but taller) center console. What kind of top mounted or right side mounted control unit can I use with the my outboard? I don't see any other control unit advertised other than the side mounted Quicksilver. Thanks for any help.
The control that is top-mounted on the center console is called a "binnacle mount", but you could easily make a "box-like" part to put on top of the console to use the side mount control. The cost of those binnacle mount controls is in the $200 range (new), and you might keep your eye out for a used one, or if you have a boat salvage joint somewhere near you, you might find a used one. I've seen "project" center console boats for sale for less than the cost of the binnacle mount control, and it wouldn't be bad to keep your eye out for a deal like that, and see if you can snag the used controls from the seller.
