Greetings all, this is my first post.

'96 pontoon with '97 Mariner 115hp. Shift lever hard to advance. Do I "grease to ease" operation? or go right to replacement? AND, can a moderately experienced do-it-yourself-er, do it his self?

thanks in advance,
Jeff

Re: Let's talk control cables...

Usually questions are about steering problems where "grease to ease" would be the obvious first answer. First thing I would do is to separate the cable from the shifter mechanism at the engine connection and ensure that the problem is the cable, not the engine or the control box, both of which can be greased.

Greasing may be a problem (trying to remember) as a lot of cables are semi-sealed, i.e. they have a wiper on the outer jacket that wipes the SS center piece that does the work. That would make it difficult, if not impossible to grease.

Best I can do, but my response will bump this back up where it can get some more hits.
