Have I got some luck? Rebuild in order now!

So it's nice today and I figure I'll take my boat out to decarb it since it's
new to me. Crank it up and let it warm up then I drive it a couple miles from
the ramp so everyone doesn't have to deal with the cloud of smoke. It
comes off plane and acts like its got a fouled plug. I limp back to the ramp
get home and check compression #1- 122 #2- 60 ouch, #3- 128. I pull
the exhaust cover and find the #2 piston ring broke and the piston stretched.
Looks like the piston ring caught the exhaust port. All the pistons were
covered in carbon.
So anyone know the going rate to resleeve a mercury 90hp 3 cylinder
if I can't just get the hole bored?

I disassembled the engine and looks like I can get by just boring the #2
cylinder. All cylinders are standard bore 3.375. I'll have to check for egg in
the other cylinders, and mic the crankshaft. So much for the motor being
previously rebuilt as I was told, unless they just put new rings in. I don't
consider it rebuilt unless it was bored. I may have to overbore the #1
cylinder as it looks worn around the exhaust port just like the #2 cyl.
does and it ate a ring. The #3 looks good and it has the highest compression
128lbs.
So now to find a machine shop to bore and hone the block.
anyone know of a good shop around B'ham, AL

I'd get another block. That one sounds like trouble. Look it over really well before you put any more money in it.

Check that front half alignment. Rebuilders often swap front halves when an engine throws a rod through them. It doesn't always work out like they think.

You can bore that engine up to .040 oversize, if you cannot find someone local that can do it PM me, As I do boring and can have it resleeved if needed.

I called a few shops today and none do blind bores. One sends his out of
town and quoted me $50/hole to bore and $15/hole to hone, about what
I was expecting. I used to do blind bores all the time when I worked as a
machinist at a job shop so I don't know what the big deal is. You just have
to keep the shavings cleared out when you get close to the bottom. I would
call the shop I used to work at but we never worked on engines and they
don't have a hone.

Most auto machine shops can bore but they don't have the hardened Sunen hone. If you figure the cost of shipping it out for honeing after it's been bored it'll be about 90.00 a hole. More if you're not having all six done.

I found a two stroke motorcyle race shop that does mine now. It cost 80.00 a hole for the first block but after that the jig was made so he only charges me 50.00 a hole now. You might give that a try.

You could also go over tp www.screamandfly.com and ask. There's some southern boy's over there that do some mighty fine work and they're reasonable.
