Am going on aq 36 hour blackfin tuna trip on the Capt John next weekend. Driving form Ohio, sure hope it warms up there. I understand we go about 100 mi offshore to an oil rig. They supply rod and reels. I'm used to freshwater fishing. Any advice, tips, etc would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea what I'm doing other than showing up.

Dress warm, 50 degrees on the water when you're wet is no fun. Seas out that far could reach 7'-10' according to what I've read. This is forecasted for Thursday and Friday as a front moves through.

You can check the marine forecast on NOAA's site for this area and also check the bouy information for wave heights and wind direction.

Here is the marine forecast for this week:
http://weather.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/fmtbltn.pl?file=forecasts/marine/offshore/gm/gmz080.txt

Just be aware that coastal weather can change at any moment so its always best to be prepared. I would also get a script for a sea sickness patch or at the very least ginger root capsules from the health food store. An old shrimper taught me about the ginger root. Start taking them the night before you go out and continue until 1 day after you return. I like them because there are no side affects and they work for me.

Tuna fishing is a lot of fun and reaping the benefits of your work is enjoying the best tasting fish you've ever eaten IMO. You're arms and back will get a good workout when the tuna dives straight to the bottom. :p

Good luck and have a safe trip.:)

You can't just post that you are taking a fantastic fishing trip and not give a report. Doesn't matter if you caught anything or even had a strike, it's all part of the sport. In my case it's been the major part. ;)

Sorry for the lack of reply.

How was the trip? First week they cancelled on Wednesday as calling for rough weather in the Gulf. They rescheduled for the next weekend. I moved my work schedule around to drive there from Ohio. On the next Thursday morning they cancelled due to rough weather. So I sat at home and looked at 10" of ice on my lake.

Is "It sucked" a fair reply?

Surely they must have given you back your deposit. Sometimes fishing trips have to be canceled due to weather conditions and sometimes canceled the morning of the trip. Prior to taking a charter I look at several weather reports and sometimes it is not feaseable to make the trip.

Did you travel to Galveston?

A few years ago I was going to go flyfishing for sharks off of San Diego, I was going to be there for several days any way. Well, the weather was so bad all week that we could not get out at all the whole time that I was there. A low pressure had formed off the coast and stalled on the coast of San Diego dumping buncho rain and high seas. That is part of booking a fishing trip, knowing that it is a 50/50 chance of being canceled.

The good news was that no money was lost. They treated us the way you would want. Just disappointed I didn't get to go. Bad enough I lost a fishing trip in the middle of winter but it was also something I hadn't done before. I'll do it one of these days.

And no, I didn't make the trip. Thank goodness they cancelled before we drove 20 hours. That would have been a real bummer.

Hey man, when I was a kid I remember cancellations very well. It sucks! My dad feeling bad would take us crabbing and fishing on the pier. It's all part of booking fishing trips. I hope you get to go out one day, its- unforgettable!

Have been blown off of Lake Erie on walleye trips, now I'm learning how the big boys play.
