Can anyone suggest a place to buy a force 120 hp lower unit, new or second hand, just need to find a damn lower unit. Just bought a Bayliner Capri Cuddy without the lower unit which seized. Im in the U.K. so shipping shouldnt be a problem.
Or if possible, can i put a different make, manufacturer, lower unit on???
Cheers, Deano

Re: Force 120 hp 1991 lower unit

Any unit from 1980 Chrysler 85-140 to 1994 Force 85-125 will physically fit. You will need to buy a prop based on the gear ratio: Some (after 1989) were 2-1 and others were 1.76 to 1, but ALL will work. Some arte dual exhaust and need a thru-hub prop While prior to 1989 you can use either the thru-hub or closed hub props.

Try for a junker engine there in the UK, buy the whole thing, and if not successfull, then try to find a lower unit on the auctions. Rebuilt they want too much--up to 1500 US dollars for a rebuilt, guaranteed unit. Good luck and happy new year.

Many thanks Frank, these forums allow many people to gain invaluable advice and information and kill the much over hyped need for professional services. Rant over, www.williamsdiesels.com if you ever have grief owning a Dodge or Mercedes. I have found a website in Ontario who have the lower unit for $1000, im just pleased to find a lower unit. Is there anything else i should order to keep the unit in its best possible condition?

Cheers

For 1000 bucks, they better guarantee it and have provided a new water pump case and impeller. Can't you find anything closer? Once they ship it to you, if you have any problems, even if guaranteed, shipping will kill you. Double check: I suspect most are shipped without oil (hazmat) so you may need to fill it.

BEFORE YOU BUY: Be certain that the shaft length is correct. Force made both 20 and 25 inch shafts and if it is newer and has a 2 piece drive shaft, be certain the upper shaft and collar comes with it. That shaft and collar is not available and used to cost 400 bucks so even a used one will be pricey.

20 inch shaft will have 4 bolts on the lower kingpin cap, the 25 inch engine will have 8 bolts on the kingpin cap and the cap will extend well below the engine mounting clamps.

I bought the bayliner without the lower unit, but, i have in the cabin 8 bolts which the previous owners say were from the lower unit, so im guessing its gonna be a 25" prop??? The company selling are asking for photos etc of whats attatched on the leg before shipping. Cant find anything in the uk, nobody has this type of lower unit and the previous one was seized.

Post a pic of your motor and back of the boat. That will help with figuring the length of the drive shaft.J
