Hey, nice motor!!:D:D It looks like it's been well cared for. I think you'll get years of good service from it. You might want to read from the top secret files here and see if there is anything you need to do to it to get things in top shape. Good luck with it. I hope you enjoy it. I just picked up a 1986 25hp myself in really nice condition.

The two basement pics are prior to buying it. it's on a stand in The pic with the fishing poles in the back ground. That's at my place.

Whew.....okay...the thought of that gem falling over about sends a chill up my spine.:D:D

Nice thing about that motor, is that it has the older style coils that were used in OMC's from 1951. A couple years later than your motor, they started using an electronic ignition system, which really was not that good.

Yeah, I have a bunch of the three coil jobbys too. I like them up to 76, Not much for the electronic stuff. I probably have about 60 old motors on my property. Pretty much all of them are points motors.

Those old 25s from 1969 - 1976 were excellent motors. They were basically the proven 18 with some porting, piston and carb changes that allowed them to peak out at higher rpm. They weighed about 82 lbs. for the manual short shaft model, lighter than a 9.9 four-stroke today. 1970 was the last year for that wedge-mailbox style cowl that started back in 1961.

Dad had a 1971 25 that was a great motor until it got stolen in 1991. He replaced it with a new 1992 Johnson 30 and kept going. The 25 was hung on the back of a Starcraft Seafarer 16" (open fishing boat) and moved along very well. It would keep up with his friend's late 60's Cutter 15" runabout with a Merc 65 horse four.

Yeah, The 25's are great little motors. they probably have one of the best weight to hp ratios out there. Always loved the old 40's too.

I noticed something. Check out the trim pin. Why is it trimmed so high? Are the other holes filled?

Got me? maybe he was shooting some rooster tails. :D

guy was a weird dude, everything he touched has to be repaired. It'll all get straightened out when I start toying with it in a month or two.

:D:D I have a friend like that. All he has to do is sit in a car and it falls apart. I've had to fix a few problems for him.:D:D

I used to have a '69 Johnson 25hp (same basic motor as yours). It was a GREAT motor. I ran it regularly for about 15 years. It started great, would get up and go and could troll all day. The only problem I ever had with it was a fuel pump. I'm sorry I let that one get away.

I picked up the same Sportster 25 this summer but mine has problems... It does not turn over smoothly, even with the head off. There's internal binding. Not good. I have to take it apart :( It's one of my winter projects. And to convert it from a long shaft to a short shaft.
