My 1977 Lowe line 16 foot seems to have a rotten transom. It squishes a lot when I tighten down the clamps of my 33hp Evinrude but loosens up after a single use. I put some 18 gauge aluminum plate on it to spread the load of the clamps but the wood itself seems spongy. The wood is trapped inside a welded framework and I was wondering if this needs to be cut out and replaced on a regular basis. As heavy as that 33 is, I am worried about the transom moving around a lot. What kind of wood is used in transoms, anyway?
