Re: how many boats does the great lakes claim?

There have been hundreds of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. Mostly in the area known as "Shipwreck Alley" near Alpena in Huron. This area has been named as a federal protected underwater sanctuary to keep the wrecks available for diving/snorkeling.

Vessels headed to Lake Superior or Chicago try to cut the angle too sharp and get too close to the many islands, shoals, and peninsulas.

The Edmund Fitzgerald is the most well-known of course, went down in Superior.

That website is pretty thorough, Fitz is listed in the "F" section as the ships are listed alphabetically by last name of the vessel.

They have around 4200 listed on the site, the indiviual who compiled it claims that there are around 5,000 total.

My dad grew up in Rogers City, MI, home of the Bradley, which went down in 1958, taking 33 with her out of her 35 total crew. This is the second largest ship to sink, the hull split in half and rests at 360'. Two men drifted on a raft for 14 hours and survived. There was a third on the raft as well who did not make it. She was scheduled for extensive repair after this last haul:(

My dad had many classmates in his elementary school whose hard-working fathers were lost from the very small town and surrounding area. The impact on the town was significant.

Thanks to David Swayze for compiling such an extensive list:)

not only has the great lakes taken many a boat, but over the last few thousand years the water level has rissen and you can find ancient indian villages 30-50feet below the surface.

Their is a famous area call "Deaths Door" north of Green Bay WI.
that claimed many boats. It is between the peninsula of
Door County and Washington Island.
