Okay, yall may think I'm being a little over conscious here but tell me what’s going on. Keep in mind-small boat, small motor-. While at WOT, planed fairly well (as good as it gets) I get sprayed with water coming up from between the motor and the transom. It appears that its just water making contact with the front of the foot and splashing up. I was wondering if I tried to trim the motor up would it help? Theres not a lot of water the gets in the boat. My hand gets alittle wet controlling the tiller, and the rest just runs down the inside of the transom, especially from the corners. (my ancor-mate gets a bath good!) I'm going to try to insert some pictures (that I drew myself, so don’t laugh! HEhe). If you dont see any pictures here, I'll email them to ya if you give me your email.

you did not put the relative path to the image in your url..<br />you need to upload the image to the server, and make sure that the url for the image is correct.. this is what you have now.:<br /><img src="file:///C:/Stuff/Pictures/Motor%20Pix/waterboat.jpg" <br /><br />it should be something like this:<br /><img src="http://www.valdosta.edu/~crwillia/waterboat.jpg"<br /><br />does that make sense?<br /><br />if the picture is in the same dirctory as your index.html file, then you can just say:<br /><img src="waterboat.jpg"<br />and it will work.<br /><br />your c drive is not accessable to everyone on the internet,, (actually if you use windows, then it probably is, but thats a conversation for lists other then this one..)<br /><br />rgds<br /><br />Frank

Waco, is the cavitation plate of the motor even with the bottom of the hull?

Re: Dont Laugh at my Pictures!

yes, within an inch or so. Its a short shaft engine on a small aluminum boat.

Re: Dont Laugh at my Pictures!

where should the cavitation plate be in reference to the bottom of the hull?

Should be even with the bottom of the boat. I have seen some larger motors with the plate an inch or so lower than the hull bottom, and they throw up roosters like the Miss Budweiser. If yours is below the bottom of the boat, cank it up so it's even.

Miss Budwieser? I really like the way that sounds! Okay, when you say "cank" (thats new to me) you want me to adjust "tilt/trim" so that the cavitation plate is even with the bottom of the boat? even though it will, at that point, not be parallel with the bottom of the hull. Am I following you so far? What will that do for planing? FouledPlug, did you see the pictures I posted? send me an email crwillia@valdosta.edu if I'm getting on the wrong track here.

I think what Mr. Plug is reffering to is... with the cavitation plate parallel to the bottom of the hull, lift the entire engine up so the plate is level or sligtly above the bottom of the boat. Might solve all of your problems.

Re: Dont Laugh at my Pictures!

went out last night, put a straight edge under the bottom of the boat and measured distance to the cavitation plate. It is not exactly parallel with the bottom of the hull. The cavitation plate in the front near the boat is 2 1/4 inches below hull line, and the rear by the prop is 2 5/8 inches below hull line. I take it I should lift the motor up about 2 1/2 inches? If thats the case, my only option is to biuld up the transom some how because this motor doesnt bolt on, it has screw clamps that hold it in place. Give me some ideas here.

Re: Dont Laugh at my Pictures!

Waco, What type boat and engine is it?? I had the same problem with my boat and engine, a 14 ft aluminum flat bottom and 25 horse Merc. I was able to raise the engine up the amount I needed and the screw clamps would still get a full hold on the transom near the top. What i did do, though, was put a block under the mount on the top of the transom for the engine to rest on and bolted the engine to the transom. I like the having the engine bolted on just for the insurance on knowing when I hit something submerged the engine isn't going to come flying off and take a swim. Raising the engine helped out in planing and speed.

This is a 14ft wide/deep flat bottom aluminum boat, with a 15hp johnson. In order for me to get it up a full 2 1/2 inches, the clamps wouldn't make full contact with the transom. I am thinking of building a block that bolts to the top of the transom that I could then clamp the motor to. think that would work? What about the cavitation plate not being exactly parallel with the hull line? does that make a big difference?

How close can you get it? I didn't get mine exactly even with the bottom on the boat. It lacked about a 1/4 to 1/8 inch. <br /><br />you use any of the instant messengers?? I'm on yahoo as obie_splyvyn if you want to talk real time abou this. I've fought this same problem on several boats.

Waco, I actually meant to say "crank" it up. :D But the motor is too low if the cavitation plate hangs down that far. Some type of spacer is in order. I once constructed one from a piece of aluminum square tubing and welded mouting tabs to it, then bolted it to the transom. Whatever you use, it has to be stout.

Re: Dont Laugh at my Pictures!

I once raise a transom for a long shaft motor with some aluminum plate and a treated 2x6. worked like a charm.

Re: Dont Laugh at my Pictures!

Just a suggestion.<br />Build up the transom with aluminum square tubing to the neccessary height and have a "U" shaped plate made that will wrap your shim plus lap over the original transom down as far as the original mounting point of the motor on both sides. I suggest stainless for the final part. Might be kinda pricey but once done, no rot and should look good. Bolt on the motor. For a example of why, read this post.<br />Mike http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=23&t=000083

Re: Dont Laugh at my Pictures!

How would I go about bolting on this motor? It doesnt have any bolt holes or tabs to drill through.
