I have a 1994 Yamaha 90 hp 2 stroke outboard motor on my Boston Whaler Montauk and the voltmeter registers over 16 volts after the engine has started and run for a while. I checked the output with a second voltmeter and this is correct. The output previously was less than 15 volts, so I suspect that there is a problem with the voltage regulator or alternator. I am assuming that this output is too high for my 12 volt systems on the boat and the health of the battery - is this correct? Where is the alternator and voltage regulator located on this motor -- I cannot seem to locate it? How is the best way to check these items to see which needs to be replaced?
