I am having trouble getting at my fuel filter on my 2007 50hp efi Merc. The fuel/water separator doesn't want to open. It looks like it should just unscrew. I'm a afraid to put a wrench on it, as it is only plastic.

There is a small pool of water in the bottom that I want to get out before it gets too cold up here.

Any tips to get this open?

Thanks in advance.

You might try a strap wrench, that shouldn't damage the filter but would wrap around it and have lots of leverage to bust it loose.

Sears has a set of rubber wrenches that oughta work for that application. Or just about any online or B&M hardware store you can think of.

BTW a good dose of Seafoam ( www.seafoamsales.com ) in the fuel will help emulsify any water in the system from Nasty Gasohol and help lessen this problem in the future.

Or, install a fuel/water separator which will cure the issue for once and for all.

Be careful using a strap wrench on this plastic filter housing as it can crush it at the leverage point. I use a rag folded over several times, wrapped around filter(hex sides) and a pair of channel locks to remove it. I am not a big fan of Seafoam in Efi outboards, I recommend the Stabil (for ethanol blends) as it treats fuel only.
