1986 Mercury 115 hp water jacket cover tourqe specs.

Can some one help me with the tourqe specs on the water jacket cover on a 1986 115 hp Inline 6 Seloc book says 12.5 FT LBS. but the gasket (coated with copper coat) sqwished out at 10 FT LBS and I am afraid of damaging the cover or threads. Is the book correct? I have screwed up two gaskets.

I messed one gasket up using a sealer, forget which, but then used no sealer and torgued until tight, using the recommended torgue sequence.

Thank you so you believe 12.5 FT LBS is correct ? Did you us any thread lock?
