Hi All,

How do I tell if my reed blocks are bad? in my 1979 merc 7.5. What would the symptoms be if they are on the way out? How hard are they to replace.

Re: 7.5 reed blocks?

Your motor has only one reed block assy which serves both cylinders.

If you were to see a lot of spit-back of fuel from the carb, that would be an indication of a broken reed valve.

What symptoms are you having, reed failures on these are uncommon. More likely are fuel, ignition, or crankcase seal problems.

Please post your Ser # so we know what year/type of ign/etc we're talking about.

BTW to replace a reed valve or the entire assy, you'd have to pull the powerhead, strip flywheel, ign & carb from the block, and remove the front half of the crankcase to gain access to crankshaft and reeds.
