Well I have a 87 Merc 60 hpr. that does not pee.
Yes I have changed out the impeller and the gaskets, plus the face plate.
It just will not pee. I have ran water backwards for 30 minutes
several times, same result.
Any one have any ideas?

Re: Water pump

Are your impeller blades bent in the correct direction and have you cleared your pee tube of debris, bugs, spiders, etc.? Good Luck!

Re: Water pump

Yep line is clear, we have mason bees here. I have to clean it
every year or block it with a piece of tape.
Like I said I ran a water line backwards, through that hose.
Motor runs very well, except for cooling.

Re: Water pump

did you remember the tiny steel pin (drive) between the shaft and the impeller? and did you bend the impeller blades the correct way according to the rotation of the drive shaft?

Yep, it's a key way and it's running so the impellers are going
the right way.

Re: Water pump

Not running hot, but its in the 40s here. Never run it more than 5 min.
I did take that brass fitting out to see if it made a difference, (on the head).
No change.
As far as lining up, it can only go in-well where it goes:eek:.
Thanks for your input all.

Re: Water pump

My 1989 merc 60hp had a similar issue. The motor was new to me,and had sat in a barn for a year or so.First things needed were an impeller, due to unknown history, and carbs cleaned.Well it started and idled great in the water, but never did pee.Double checked my water pump work and all was well. But here was the issue, the upper end of the water tube fits into a plastic housing on the lower side of the exhaust plate.Supposed to be held in place by 2 10-32 screws about an 1 1/4" long (the housing that is) but one of my screws had worked out, allowing the housing and thus the water tube to rotate about the remaining screw and not allowing the water into the powerhead. Get your flashlight and peer up there if you have the LU off again. I was able to replce the housing, gasket and screw from the bottom, with lots of extensions.

Re: Water pump

Wow! that must be it!
That is all it could be!
I do have it off, as I was running water-in the lower unit.
Just to see if water was acutally getting to the pump.
That is a long way up there. I'll post info after I check it.
There is no water going to the head and water is circulatingaround the pump.
Thanks!!!!!:)

Re: Water pump

One other thing to consider.

Does your upper waterpump housing have a stainless cup insert? If there are even the slightest grooves worn in the top of the insert then the impeller won't operate properly and you will end up with a poor water flow.

When you removed the plug from the head was there any water flow from it?

Thanks,
The cup is clean- no grooves.
When I take that brass plug out- no flow.
The only thing I found, was small piece of the OLD impeller. Triangle shaped
about 3/8", on it's longest side. It matched up with the part missing, on the old one.
Right now, it's blowing about 30 mph and raining-very hard.
I'll try to get a digital pict of the place the tube goes into CrappieJig was
describing.
Thanks for your input!:)

Re: Water pump

Pull the water tube from the waterpump and insert it up into the powerhead. It should stick in place.

Attach a garden hose (duct tape or whatever) to the water tube and turn on the tap. Water should flow from the telltale and the port (plug removed ;)) on the head.

If not, then your old impeller has broken up and plugged the cooling system somewhere. If that is the case, then you may need to pull the powerhead to find the offending bit :(

Re: Water pump

The water tube will not stay up there.
I'll get on it in the day light and less weather.
Not looking forward to pulling the power head:eek:
I'd let the water run in it for days first.
Thanks again!

If the water tube won't stay up there, you may be missing the O ring. If it is not sealing, you are not generating pressure to flow through the engine.

You did not say if you are running in a lake, tank, or on muffs. If on muffs, the hose water is cool enough to prevent the thermostat from opening and it won't pee because of the bypass. If on shore and you do not have a tank, tilt the motor up and then tilt a garbage can so you can get it around the motor. Then put the motor back down. This will let you recirculate the water until it is warm enough to open the thermostat.

I use a 30 gallon plastic barrel that I drilled the lower bottom side to fit a boat plug so I can drain it.

Re: Water pump

Thanks!
I'm using muffs.
I was told by a Mercury parts guy, no thermostat on this motor (?).
I do have a 30 gal can, I'll hook it up.
First I need to look up there and see what it looks like.
The tube will not stay up, I've tried that.

Re: Water pump

I stand corrected. Did not find anything specific except the thermostat chart in the other posting. But I did read that some mercury outboards from an earlier year did not have a thermostat.

Re: Water pump

Never heard of a Merc water cooled engine being designed without a thermostat.

Sierra lists two thermostats for a 60 hp.

http://www.iboats.com/Mercury_Thermostats/dm/*******.483507003--**********.748207927--view_id.271501

I'll try to locate a manual and get back to you.

I noticed that from my search.
When I run water backwards, thru the pee hose, the water runs
out thru the exhuast (LU installed). I would think it would not allow
the (cold water) to come out, if it did have one (?)
Thanks again!

Re: Water pump

I missed that if you run water backwards from the pee hole it comes out from the exhaust. Maybe there is debris plugging the system that is acting like a flap. Reverse pressure pushes it open and allows flow, forward pressure pushes it into position to block the flow.
