Hi guys

Having probs starting a new (2nd hand merc 50hp) engine i purchased and think the problem lies in the control box. There is a plug that something has to go into and on the inside of the control there is 4 wires coming out of it, brown, grey, black & purple. The latter two go back to the ignition key. At the front of the socket it looks like whatever is supposed to plug in has 3 pins on the connector.

Would really like to bypass this but don't know which ones to join up?!?

The engine turns over fine on the key but there is no spark.

Cheers

Matt

Those sound like tach leads. What year is the motor?

Hi, yeah they are, feel a bit stupid now. I popped down to the local marine engineers and they confirmed they are. The engine is a mid 80's model i think.

Do you know if you have to turn the kill switch on the quicksilver control on and off to reset it if you change the battery?

No, you don't. Disconnect the black/yellow wire at the switchbox then recheck for spark. If you now have spark there is a problem with the kill circuit.

Your motor is a 1985. What do you mean by switch panel? The switchbox I'm talking about is under the cowling. Next steps is to check your stator and trigger according to your manual. You can't really check the switchbox but you can check input/output to it with a DVA.
