Steering Stuck but not in Tilt tube

I have an 1996 Evinrude 48 and the steering cable is jammed but not in the tilt tube i can slide it in and out of the tube. It is stuck in the jacket somewhere. The bar that goes into the cable is stuck inside the cable. how can i fix this or remove it. Wheel will not budge dont want to pull to hard and break anything. Any help is appreciated. One more thing what is the best way to pull the new cable through the boat. Thanks

i would replace with a Rotary system, easier to install.

Will I have to remove the engine to get the cable off and installed since i cant remove the cable from the shaft that goes into the tilt. And i am sorry it is a rotary system..

I have freed up a few cables over the years. It may not work for you but it will not hurt to try. Remove the cable from the motor, lightly tap on the end of the cable while someone turns the wheel in the direction where the cable would go in. If it starts to move, keep it moving and lube it up. Once the cable is all the way out, wipe it down and relube it. Most likely, either the cable, helm or both will need replaced but it does not hurt to try. The cables I freed up were due to dried mud, not corrosion.

I am looking at replacing my rack/pinion system next year. I can pull the rack off in a matter of minutes. Can I replace the rack with a rotary system? My rack is easy to pull out from inside the cuddy. What advantages would there be to switching to a rotary system if any?

I'm sorry, I don't understand the problem. Can you not remove the steering rod on the port side of the tilt tube, then remove the nut circled in red, then pull the cable end out of the tilt tube?

The cable can be removed from the helm by releasing the cable housing. If you push a screwdriver into the little hole circled in red, the housing releases. You will then have to turn the steering wheel anti-clockwise to feed the cable out of the helm.

I just wanted to say thanks to all of the people on this thread that made my downtime a WHOLE lot shorter.

Had steering wheel completely spinning in a circle on Friday, sent customers from Saturday with another guide that was more expensive and came out of my own pocket $100.

This is a thank you and I have added a few pics that I hope will help help the next guy in my situation, great forum here.

I was thinking the rotary helm was one piece with the cable and black sheath until I saw the picture posted above my post that showed the spot to push and release the cable. This helped me narrow the problem to the helm itself, the gears were stripped inside the helm. I only need to replace the helm, therefore saving about $150.
Helm- The helm is the aluminum steering box in the picture below

Cable- Is spiraled and you must turn steering shaft after you release the brass connector with the pinhole that was provided in the previous posted picture to push the brass fitting on the teleflex cable out of the helm.

Cable- Sits inside the big black conduit sheath and the sheath is not removed only the cable inside. Sheath acts as a protector for the teleflex cable inside.

If your like me and have 2-90degree elbows in your sleeve running through your boat, you pray you never have to feed anything that size through those two elbows.

Now to figure out where to set the motor when I feed the cable back into the new helm. Left, Right, or center???
