Motor will run but won't kick in second cylinder until gas is almost gone. Have replaced needle and seat in carb and fuel lines and disconnect valve. Runs great when second cylinder does kick in. Hard to start after as flooding inevitably occurs. Compression and spark are good.

There should be no reason that it runs better when it gets low on gas.
It is probably getting warm enough that the coil or condenser heats up and functions. Then after it's ran it won't work again. Sounds electrical.Remove the flywheel and clean the points. Then try to run it.
You can change the condenser and the coil without messing up anything to much.J

I will try that, thanks. But maybe I need to be clearer. Its not when it gets low on gas, its when the gas can is empty or if I manually decrease the amount of gas gettting to the motor, by crimping the fuel line. Not a permanant fix, I know. The amount of gas getting into the engine seems to be way too much.

sounds like its running rich ,as it runs out of gas it leans out and allows the cylinder to start hitting as the fuel mixture gets to a range that will fire, could still be weak spark on that cylinder but really it sounds rich. Does it have twin carbs or single? If two carbs ,look at the carb on the bad cylinder, if one carb ,check the points , plug and electrical system in general for a problem. Also check for vacuum leaks at and around the carb.Hope this helps, keep us posted on you findings . MOPARMAN ROLL TIDE 9-0

One carb. Checked electrical and get good spark from both cylinders. I will try running leaner mixture through and check carb for vacuum leaks. Thanks.

I am suspicious about your compression in the number 2 cylinder. If leaning causes it to fire.... then what might be occurring is the higher temperatures in that cylinder may be causing piston & ring expansion where minimal compression can finally ignite your fuel/air ratio.

By the same token, a good oil/fuel ratio is dependant on several things, temperature of cylinder, timing, and crankcase sealing which preheats the fuel on the downstroke. One cylinder can easily fire on marginal conditions if it has higher compression. A lower compression cylinder will just show wet plugs.

Another thing which can cause symptoms like this is reed action from unequal vacuum in the piston strokes.

Just a quick comment without thinking it through since I am guessing here on what you have done and are doing.
