FD-12 not cooperating

Hey there, I have an old 1958 Johnson Seahorse 18hp. Now it had been sitting for about 15 years, luckily nothing was frozen on it so it has good compression.
My problem is it won't stay running. I took all the points off and cleaned 'em up and set the gap, gapped the plugs, checked the condensers and coils and their good. I also rebuilt the carb. Now it'll sometimes pop over and idle for about 5 seconds and die before I can start tuning the fuel mixture. I can't even get it to pop anymore. It should have enough fuel to it, I'm just not sure whats up. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you verified that you have spark. Just because it was running, does not mean that you are continuing to get spark.

Also, check that you are getting consistant fuel flow. When you rebuilt the carbs, are you sure all of the jets were propery cleaned and are free of debris... Also, are you sure that you put the floats back in with the correct level for needle valve closure?

Do you have a manual? and if so, did you preset the jet, air and idle screw on the carb prior to trying to run it so that you can then refine the adjustments...

All are valid questions and just trying to determine just were you are with the troubleshooting...

Yes to all of it. I have found out what the problem was. I just pulled the carb back off and tore it apart and found a small piece of old fuel line that had flaked off and lodged in the fuel inlet causing blockage. Thats what I get for trying to use the old fuel line. New stuff on now though. Guess I could have done that before posting, but lesson learned. It's humming like a champ now. Thanks for the responce and I love the forums.

I love those motors! I have two and run them regularily. Can't wait for winter to pull one apart and replace some of the things I should have in the first place: The cork float and the fuel lines to make it ethanol tough.

Send a picture, I think mine is one of the roughest looking around as it has sat outside uncovered for most of the 50 years. Still runs good though!
