Well..
You guys have gotten me this far
Dropped lower
Changed impeller (thanks Don S)
Got lower back on AFTER taking off the upper
Complete OD back on the boat..
Shifting at the helm I almost have "N"..Definitly have all forward motion. No "R"
Obviously the shift linkage went astray..
I had it (thought) locked in fwd during the install back onto the boat.
Bungee corded the prop to keep it in FWD.
Shift foot in forward...

How do I remedy this latest round of "Sorry Hunny, we can't take the boat back out yet" ?? lol

How about "sorry Hunny, here's some money...go shopping"

Seriously though, you're likely going to have to pull the drive and try again. Sounds like the foot on the shift shaft didn't make it into the shift slide properly.

Well, you could have missed the shift slide shown here

Or maybe you missed the SS washer on the lower shift shaft.

well...
The shift slide is OK..
I have the OD off again.
What I was seeing was that the lower shift "foot" (terminoligy?) was not going into the slot from the upper rod that is moved by the shift slide.

I was thinking I need to rubber band it up till it goes on..But I noticed that I can not budge that foot (which actually shifts the lower gears) Sure it lifts up a 1/4 inch..but turning it to "R" or "N" is impossible.

I have tried turning the shaft while turning the foot at the same time. No deal.

I have a feeling the lower is coming back off again huh?

The lower foot or shoe should turn easily to shift the gears. If you tried forcing the lower in place you may have bent the "C" part in the lower.

Re: phase 3..OD on now shifting issues

Thanks for that, but eventually the lower dropped in nicely..No forcing

When I changed the impeller and put the units together, I had the OD upside down, so I could drop the lower on top, rather than fighting and lifting it into the upper from the bottom..well...guess I'll be draining that brand new OD lube out..dang it..

I will have to get back in there and see WTH is going on..

With it up side down, I have no doubt but that you left out the washer.

Re: phase 3..OD on now shifting issues

update.

OD back off.
Lower & upper sepeated again.
Mark was right. Washer was nowhere to be found...cept on the ground under the truck..

BUT..
Put washer back on the lower shift where it belongs..Got upper back on the lower..

Simply can NOT move the shift foot at all...
Earlier in the week, I had the upper n lower on my make do sawhorse bench.
I moved the upper off..and the lower slid off and banged on the ground. That is when the washer went astray...

I really hope I am not in over my head now...I could use a bit of guidance on what to do next, other than skip a car payment and go to the shop with it.

About the only thing to suggest is to take it back apart (you should be experienced at that by now ;) ) and see if you can turn the shift shaft in the lower unit. Also see if the intermediate shift shaft (the part that sits in the upper and fits in the "shoe") is bent or not.

Thanks Mark..

The shoe in the upper rotates freely when seperated from the lower..so thats not it.

I tried to turn the lower shift shaft by hand..May put some rag lined vise grips on it to see...

Before you pull the drive back off. Tilt the drive up and look at the shift shafts. Are they together as they should be?

Re: phase 3..OD on now shifting issues

Don, if I understand him correctly, he is saying it is now locked up and he cannot turn the shaft.

Kev - it will be hard to turn the lower shaft with nothing on it... but it should turn easily when you use the vise grips. (Being careful not to mess up the splines).

Yes Mark is correct.
The OD is off and I installed the washer on the lower shaft.
Upper seated to lower..And can not turn the upper foot by hand to get "N" or "R".
Locked in FWD.

Re: phase 3..OD on now shifting issues

Are you sure you used the right washer? If it's too thick, it will bind the shift shaft in the upper housing.

Re: phase 3..OD on now shifting issues

I'm sure.

Looking at the manual (the downloaded, not the POS one that starts with an S)

There is also a rubber washer that goes UNDER the SS one?
This was not present when I removed the lower earlier this week..
What purpose does the rubber washer serve?

I do appreciate the help and the education..

Keeps marine growth from growing between the washer and the seal.
