Hi, Would anyone like to comment on strengths and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages, of the OMC 60's and 90's that were built from say the mid 1980's thru the late 1990's? Durability, fuel economy, maintenance issues, noise levels or anything else. Thanks

I can only comment on my 83 90HP crossflow, sure it's hard on fuel but the thing is bullet proof as far as i'm concerned. I the only thing I've done to it in 2 years is routine maintenance (plugs, lower unit oil, winterizing) and a new rectifier, it has never let me down.

in the mid 90's they added a second style 90 HP..a mechanic calls it the EAGLE BLOCK...and is a 60 degree looper compared to a 90 degree crossflow... and i think they were OIS ignition motors as well..

most i have heard is the 60 degree is better on gas and revs higher and actually produces a little bit more HP.

dont know much about the 60 hp motors

I have a 1997 90 hp but it has a knock

other wise it runs very good and strong...just dont trsut it.

Unlike the 90 degree V4 engines, the inline 3 cylinders are harder to adjust for a low/smooth idle.

I cant help but think that a 60 HP V4 will be more POWERFULL, than a 60 hp 3 cylinder....because of the increased torque.

anyone know the cubic inch displacement of either motor??

OOPPS I re -read he was talking motors since the 80's

V4 60 is 70.6 cu in,3 cyl 60 prior to 89 49 cu.in.89-56 cubes.
Weights roughly the same.

Keep in mind the year of the engine you are comparing. In the mid 80's engines went from crankshaft ratings to prop ratings. Any prop-rated engine will have (maybe 15%) more hp than an identical, but older crank-rated engine.
