Serial # is 0B247771 short shaft, pt, 3 cly. Says classic fifty on leg, 45 on hood. Is it 45 or 50 hp? My book says it can be either but doesn't say anything about short shafts. Thanks, for any information in advance.

Re: Classic fifty?

The classic fifty was a 4 cyl. 500. When the Japanese began exporting to the US
they rated hp at the PROP SHAFT where we had rated hp at the crank shaft.
Made our engines look puny and resulted in US makers lowering hp ratings on
existing engine platforms.

That old block finally became a 40 hp model with a modern 1 piece fiberglass
cowling. Still one of the best engines Mercury made.
