Re: new tohatsu 20 hp

I bought one online earlier this year. 20hp, electric start. Just barely got thru the breakin period, but so far so good. It is the same motor as Mercury and Nissan. Pushes a 14 foot tinny just fine. Might be bit small for 16 foot, depending one weight of the boat, and how many folks in it.

Usual rule of thumb is to get at least 75% of manufacturers max rated hp for the boat.

Re: new tohatsu 20 hp

I bought a new 18hp about 7 years ago, and ran it on my 1848 jon boat.

It did a great job, so I'd say to go for it!

Fuel stabilizer use helps keep everything in tip-top shape, but that's
common for all motors.

Good luck!

Re: new tohatsu 20 hp

i bought my 20 hp short shaft in late 08 , had it for about a year now and love it . electric start is a must, and i think all the 09 20hp models come with power trim for shallow water use. went about 28 rivermiles up river in one tank 2.5 gallons and had gas left over. oh its on a 14 ft jon boat
