merc 8 h.p. needs help?????

I have a merc 8 h.p. which was submerged in bad weather on a swinging mooring, To my amazement the little star started o.k. only problem is it will only cruise as soon as i give it some revs it just dies. I know what your all thinking get it serviced only problem is i just had it serviced before it sank. what with a credit crunch & all that i really need to sort it myself. any help welcome

What year and model is the motor?

You might begin with draining the fuel tank and the carb fuel bowl. Water might be mixed with the fuel. And are all the electrical parts thoroughly dry?

I once submerged a 2 cycle Yamaha dirt bike (don't ask how). It even had water in the case around the crank. Partial disassembly was the only way to deal with that. Water and bearings don't mix.
