yesterday 10-15-09: 4:25pm Marina called the house, says boat taking on water, but pumping out
4:55 pm wife calls me on cell, was on my way after work to check it anyway.
5:35 pm found boat capsized and sunk in slip.
Marine / State police confirm no fuel spill - yet.
08:30 am Salvage guy says its too windy, waiting. Weather channel says its a double-nor' easter. I think they made this up just for me.:(
no insurance. this older boat usually trailered, put in slip, took newer boat home
on trailer to mount electronics. Big problem.
can't wait to work on submerged outboard recovery procedure in the cold and rain.
Don't be me!!:mad::mad:

That sucks. What make/model?

Sorry for your loss... The good news is that you and family are healthy and alive. As bad as that is, could always be worse.

yeah I was sent a picture of a Coast Guard cutter going over a big wave at 45 degrees out near Shinnecock on Long Island....the boat was probably a 35-40 footer and the wave was dwarfing the boat....

40 knots+

does that mean the northeast will have a rash of "used" outboards on craigslist in 3 months????

Sorry to hear this. Where are you located in the northeast? If it's not to far maybe I can offer some assistance.

no insurance.

I was not feeling bad for you after reading this. No way I'd have a boat in a slip without insurance.

this older boat usually trailered, put in slip, took newer boat home on trailer to mount electronics.

Then I read this and now I feel really bad for you :( Let us know how it goes.

Re: northeast: check your boat!! mine just sank

what size boat was it? I know most of the boats in the catergory I was looking all had level floatation...so the boat could get swamped but not sink.

I am guessing your boat was fiberglass, dont they have floatation???

I was thinking that the coast guard required floatation is recreational boats

how goes as smoothly as it could from here on out for you..

I wonder if there is a lesson here for any of us..

extra batteries to run big automatic bilges? special mooring equipment, or practices.
some better communication from the slip owners, pro action by the slip owners?

They required them to float, but not level. You might have a foot of the nose bobbing around.

Boats with floatation will still roll; they just won't sink. Once they have too much water in them it doesn't take much to spin them.

Although, even then, couldn't imagine being without insurance even if I had 10 boats. Still sucks, sorry to hear yer troubles.

We've debated extensively why boaters should have liability insurance, but that's not the same as property insurance. It's the same as insuring an old car; it may be better economically not to insure.

Hope you'll be able to restore her with out too much cost to you, I hate it when you try to do the right things still to have things go wrong. It stinks I know.
