greetings I'm new to this forum and have 3 old motors to get running but the questions relate to the 4hp twin this motor was given to me about 2 weeks ago by the widow of a friend as none of the family were keen to fix it up.I used this very motor as a teeneger with my friend so it has special meaning to me.The list of questions are as follow it has a broken fuel tank this is the onboard tank twin so is it gravity fed in otherwords could I hook up a gravity fuel supply just to try getting it to run or does it have a fuel pump if I were to try find a tank where would I start I am in australia. It is not fitted with an air filter should it have one.And lastly I have seen on ebay cd roms covering many years of evinrude motors these are supposedly workshop manuals has anyone any experience with these or does someone have a pdf manual for this motor for sale Because I am sure the impeller would be shot by now and would need replacing and a full servicing would be in order. It turns over by hand nicely sorry about the long list but thanks in advance for any help .....pete

What a scoop.... An old outboard with memories attached! I empathize because I too often become heir to things/engines that others have neglected or given up on. Becomes a labour of love.

What make is that engine? I tried referencing it in the Johnson/Evinrude files oon this site http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=9c60db3eafc1f4b20ccd2da688b6ec1c but came up empty. I think the model number you stated is incorrect.

If you are serious about that motor, get a factory manual from Ken Cook http://www.outboardbooks.com/.

The CD manuals are OK for occasional reference but are reproductions of Seloc or Clymer manuals. The CD format is very awkward to navigate through. I have a couple that I purchased off ebay. I don't regret buying them, but would be very frustrated if I didn't have the factory manual.

I was not ware they made a 4 with the attached tank. That would be handy. I have fixed up a 73 Seahorse for a buddy but it had an external tank as does my 71 lightwin. Agree to stay away from the cd manuals. Most are junk. You could also try ebay for a manual. There are lots on there for sale usually. No air filter as they run in a dustless environment. Best of luck. Rick.

ok lost my reply so will try again, many apologies for not getting back here sooner, but repairs to house, and kids cars have taken up a lot of timeso now it,s time for me.Thanks for the replies I will search those links.I now have the original hand book for this motor and inside in the model number box it says b4186 and the serial number is 44b36r,I am here in australia so wether model numbers were different I dont know, yes it is an onboard tank and I want to have a go at getting it to fire so will try a lawnmower tank.An old mate that collects outboards has suggested I replace the thermostat housing and waterpump so I better start some sprayings of crc to penetrate the threads a bit.I also have a 1954 seagull that does run and a 1966 4hp merc that sat unused for the last 35years I have had a new impeller fitted but have not got round to trying to start it yet.anyway any suggestions would be appreciated so please any info would be great cheers.
Ok thanks old rude dude did the engine search nothing I could find there had the onboard tank so now I will try the workshop manual search

44B36 is the model number for a 1974. Virtually unknown here in USA, so we probably won't be a whole lot of help. For instance, the gas tank--all of ours had remote tanks. It is my wild uneducated guess that you probably can fit it with a fuel pump and run a remote tank, but I don't know that to be a fact.

I would be very surprised if it has a thermostat.

Yeah, that is a European model. While US 4hp had fiberglass hoods, remote tanks, and side-mounted throttle levers, the European version had the onboard tank and front mounted sliding throttle lever( ala late 40's early 50's). Completely different looking motors. There are remote tank conversion kits available for the US models, i guess they would work on your motor if it has a fuel pump-mount by-pass cover.

But just for starting purposes, you can attach a remote tank directly to the carburetor, and place it somewhere above the motor, to simulate a gravity-feed system

Thanks guys, the gravity feed bit i will have a go at it is a pity the original tank is so split and I did not have much luck searching the manual sellers either, all were for the US models so this one could be fly by the seat of my pants and hope.If anyones interested I could try uploading a pic or 2 cheers

Hey all it's been a long time between visits and I am still hunting for a tank fitting a fuel pump meant drilling and tapping the crankcase for a pulse line. But I have been hunting ebay for an impeller /water pump kit but I cant get a reference number for the parts I can only find USA parts references.I have had the old girl fire up on ether only a short blast so I know she will be a goer.Anyone who may have any ideas if the water pump kits would match between USA and european made models please post away. Also have just ben given a 2 @ hp waterboy it has siezed from sitting but I have a full original parts manual given to me with it,I have never heard of them, maybe something made by lawn boy mowers,I will find out one day.

The integral tank 4 started in Europe (and evidently Australia) for 1972. The North American 4s went to the integral tank design for 1979, making them the same as the European style (at least to my eyes).

Just another part of the puzzle?

Re: 1973 4hp twin modelB4186

Hi back to the partial rebuild and the search for parts .I dropped the gearbox off last night while searching for a waterpump part number the housing has to my searches an american part number which is 313678,the housing looks in good order with no pitting or corosion.
The impeller has no cracks and is still very flexible but I can find no part number on the impeller, when it goes back together does it have a gasket or just gasket sealer
.Next how do I get the shaft back into the gearbox the whole lot toppled during the night only a few inches but enough for the prop to move and now I dont know which way up the impeller was
.I should not have trusted the cardboard box on my bench.Next time I will take photos, all advice gratefully received.
I am still working without a manual, also does anyone know if one of the american on board tanks that i just read about in the previous post would match mine.
I am visiting an old mate tomorrow who may have a parts list.
