I thought Type C was for electric shift gear cases from the 60s. Can it also be used in mechanical shift gear cases? How is Type C different?

In the 60's manual shift lower units called for Hypoid 90 gear oil and electric shift called for Hypoid 80C. As has already been stated, the 80C is a thinner oil. I'm not sure what the "C" classification means.
