i have a 2002 225 evinrude ficht. the motor runs great on the hose but when we put the boat in the water after 20 minutes or so the motor just dies. at first i thought it might be something easy like the kill switch or key switch but after my last try in the water i eliminated those 2 things. at this point i just dont know what direction to go. any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: need help

Does it die suddenly or slowly like it is running out of fuel? Have you checked codes? Is check engine light come on when this happens? Will it restart after it dies? Do you have to pump the bulb back up to get it to start?

Re: need help

All good questions. Describe the issue in a little more detail and we should be able to help... Most of these issues come down to fuel, not all but most. Just have to track it down...

Re: need help

it just dies like i was turning the key off. thats what led me to think key or kill switch. after about 20 minutes it will start and run for 20 more minutes and die again

Kind of sounds like electronics heating up, cutting out, cooling, then heating up and cutting out again. You should check spark right after it cuts out.

Re: need help

once it dies it wont crank over or do anything and after 15 or 20 minutes it starts rite up

That sounds like a bad connection from the battery. A bad connection will have high resistance and produce heat. A hot connection has higher resistance to current. Viscious circle until resistance reaches infinity --> no current flow.

Re: need help

There was several years those engines had PDP failures(power distribution panel). Check all connections at battery and and at panel. Also take a meter or test light with you when it fails and check voltage at fuses. If most have power PDP is OK, if not check the power relay first then retest power to PDP. If all is OK check water flow to EMM as voltage regulator is internal on this engine and failure to cool it will overheat EMM and shut it down.
