the shift rods have nipples, and the thin section has to be lined up with the screw hole. sometimes the screw will go in when the link rods aren't properly seated, and your shifting will be out of whack. Another thing to check is the shift adjustment screw, it could be missing and the shift lever slips. otherwise you shoudn't need to adjust it if you are 100% sure you relinked the shift rods exactly as before

When you replace the L/U, make sure the shift lever on the motor is in Forward gear. Push the shift rod in the L/U all the way down (reverse). Now put the L/U on. Once secure, line the shift rod up with the hole in the coupler. Now, while holding it in position, have someone slowly move the shift lever into reverse. Watch to make sure the indent in the end of the shift rod aligns with the hole in the coupler. Replace the coupler bolt - it should go in easily. Any difficulty screwing it in means the bolt is not going through the indent in the shift rod.
