What type of grease should you use to hold the push rod back when replacing a mechanical fuel pump? Should you also grease the contact point on the pivot arm of the pump?

I've used wheel bearing grease in the past.

i'm sure there's no real reason to be too particular here, but I was just trying to make sure -- stuff with lithium in it may be harmful?

What engine? Some engines have a bolt in the front of the block that you remove and install a longer bolt - it will hold the rod in place. Then you remove and replace with the original bolt. But that only applies to some engines....

I was hoping that the title of this post would get your attention Bond-O.

Seriously though, should I be regreasing the arm casing of the fuel pump as well as where the push rod hits the pump arm?

That engine will have the bolt I was referring to. Much easier and more certain than using heavy grease. That's IF you can access the bolt easily.

Ayuh,... I'd used the longer bolt in the block trick like Mark says,...
None of it needs Greasin',.... It's all on the Oilside of the block....
Although,....
Greasin' it won't hurt a thing,... it'll desolve into the oil....

Re: What type of grease to hold push rod?

I'm planning on taking this on tonight as the weather here is freezing a bit colder every night. I'm confused as to where this bolt would be located. Pardon the picture, but is this (red arrow) it? If I'm in a pinch though, the grease will work fine...(?)

another quick question for you experts as well:

Should I use silicone or gasket seal on either side of the gasket? I think the old one was sealed to the pump.

Yes, that is the bolt. And yes, grease will work - just not as well in my opinion. If you use the bolt method, be sure to use some thread sealer on the original bolt when you put it back in or it will leak oil.

Re: What type of grease to hold push rod?

ok thanks. would permatex form-a-gasket or pipe dope work for sealing that bolt?

and about my other question, do you have an idea on using a silicone or gasket glue on one side of that gasket?
