None of the single conventional lift pumps are adequate for a 1989 140 Looper. Your best bet is to use the VRO/OMS look-alike for premix only, or use two lift pumps.

BTW, the 1982 150 used two lift pumps as shown in the parts catalog (click the thumbnail); the big bore 140 V4 is thirstier than and needs at least as much pump as the 150.

Re: 1989 140 evinrude fuel pump conversion kit

I have a 1981 V4 140. Can you tell me more about fuel pumps and upgrade options? I currently seem to have a fuel pump from 1990+ on it. but only 1. I just ordered a repair kit for the gaskets etc. as one diaphragm had a hole in it and the main pump flexible piece seems stiff due to age. Engine keeps stalling at idle after a few minutes unless I kept pumping the primer sometimes stall when i hit the throttle, runs fine with a more open throttle.

Should I have 2 pumps, where would it be installed to get compression off the engine?? What about electric assist pumps near the tank? Worth the effort?

I'm hoping fixing the damaged diaphragm fixes my issue, but am curious about other options.

To BillLinda: The 1981 V4 140 is a crossflow engine and will perform on a single conventional lift pump. I believe that OE part number 0438559 will do.
