Just aquired a lightly used 1972 Evinrude 18hp motor. sheared the pin or key on the top of the drive shaft that spins the flywheel. How do I replace this key or pin? any input is much appreciated

You have to remove the flywheel to replace the key. You will need to remove the recoil starter, if it has one. remove the flywheel nut, there will be 3 bolt holes around the crankshaft nut , you need a puller and bolts (grade 8 ). Install puller and thighten down puller and flywheel will come off.

Remove sheered key, check for crank or flywheel damage, install new key from dealer and torque flywheel to spec.

Make sure that you use torque wrench. 40 ft/lb, or you will be doing it again real soon. Don't ask how I know.

I got the fly wheel off, how does the key come out? seems like it goes down futher into the shaft, do I need to remove anything else to get it out?

It does, use a small punch and a hammer to tap it out, they are a half moon so start at the edge, use penetrating oil if need be, don't hammer the crap out of it or you will wreck the crank.

If the key is sheared off even, take a small punch on on end of the key and tap it with a hammer, it should rock it out. Then you cane grab it with a pair of pliers.

Evinrude stopped making the 18hp in '71 so it's probably a '71...

Hmm - interesting. Maybe a European model was considered 20hp? Mine is definitely a Fastwin, but 18hp.
