Hi! Hope you can help! We have a 1992 Chaparral 196 ssi with a Mercruiser 5.0 engine, boat would turn but would not completely start. Replace ignition switch, still won't start. Troubleshot, found we have voltage to the coil but no fire.

Additional question- if the coil is bad can we use an automotive coil?

Any help is appreciated!

Assuming since it's a 190hp motor, it's carbed and you have a Thunderbolt ignition system.
Follow this troubleshooting chart.
