my friend has a 1984 115hp merc outboard that starts up on command but falls on it's face when given gas, what could be the problem?

That symptom is usually due to dirty carbs or incorrect idle mixture adjustment. Did it just start happening, or was it getting worse gradually?

Did your frine adjust or rebuild the carbs? Did he just start using gasoline with alcohol in it?
