We have 92 200HP Mercury XRI that we are having problems with. We put it on the water yesterday for the first time since we have owned it. The motor starts just fine but does not tach up like it should. At full throttle it was only running about half the max speed. We thought that maybe it just needed to be run as it has sat up for almost a year while we made repairs to it. When we decided to bring it back in we were sitting at the shore with it idling when the alarm went off with continuous steady beeps. We have replaced the plugs, the computer, checked the compression, both oil tanks are full and the motor is getting oil. Fuel is also pumping fine into the motor. So now here are my questions:

1.) Are all motor alarm codes the same? (ie continuous beep means no oil)
2.) Could the float on the oil tank under the cover be bad or have bad connection?
3.) What are some other possible troubleshooting things we could do?

Thank you in advance for any and all responses.

First drain the fuel and try fresh, drain the vst tank also. Have you check to see if its firing on all 6 cylinders? Are the beeps a rapid beep-beep-beep? If so the oil float could be stuck down or the oil gear is not spinning at correct rpm (stripped) or oil module bad. What computer did you replace ,the ECU??
Dont try to run this engine and hope it clears up as if a fuel problem the mixture could be lean resulting in a burnt piston or scuffef one do to lack of fuel/oil mix. Here what I would check:

(1) check spark with spark tester
(2) check fuel pressure (36-39psi) at rail
(3) fresh fuel
(4) oiling system (beeps)
(5) If all checks ok have injectors sent out for cleaning as may have debris in filters/pintle. And additives will not clean them so dont add any to fuel system untill its serviced if need.

Thank you for the reply to my questions.

Yesterday was the first time that we have run it since we replaced the ECU last fall. We had already drained the fuel and put fresh in the tank before we took it out yesterday. Yes the sound is a BEEP BEEP BEEP constantly. We have checked all the spark plugs after we brought it in yesterday and they are all firing. We took the lid off the oil tank under the cover and cleaned the float in it. We are getting 133- 140 compression reading from all 6 cylinders. The motor is smoking as though it is getting plenty of oil. We are really stumped with all of this because it starts, runs and idles with no problem it just doesn't have the speed it should have and the alarm going off?

Could there be a coil breaking down as well causing this problem?
Where is the VST tank located?
Is the oil module located at the back of the motor where the blue wire from the cap under the cover connects?

Sorry for all the questions but we have never had a Mercury motor.

TIA again

The beeping is the oil alert module. That engine cops a tap in the oil level circuit (oil tank) that goes to the fuel/water separator. You can disconnect both of those and see if it beeps at idle. It does need to be running to set off the alarm. Then, if it quits beeping, connect them back up one at a time to see which it is.

If it continues to beep with the oil tank and the fuel filter disconnected, then it is one of three items. 1. No pulses from the pump motion detector. 2. No pulses from the switchbox (green wire). 3. Bad oil alert module.

Ask me how I know all that. :D:eek:

hope it helps

TY so much for this information, I am assuming you know all that because you have been through the same thing.:D

To disconnect the oil tank under the cover there is a blue and a black wire coming off of the lid, the black is a ground that connects at the back of the motor and the blue wire goes into a box at the back with a bunch of other wires, correct?

Where exactly is the switch box that you are talking about located?

The VST tank on that engine is on the port side and it being a 92 should have the electric fuel pump mounted externally on it. There is a drain screw in the bottom of it to drain it. The oil system wont affect the WOT operation unless engine is seizing, so clean and inspect fuel system throughly. Also this engine may have a detonation module on it, it will be mounted on top of oil module and if knock sensor is bad, connections are bad or purple wire is disconnect it will not let timing advance. Also check to see if map sensor hose is still connected to manifold since ECU was replaced as it may have come off.

Thank you so much for your reply.

The only tank on our engine is located directly above the ECU, the cap on it has 2 wires coming out of the top and a float on the inside. The purple wire is connected and the map sensor hose is connected to the manifold. We have inspected the fuel system completely and cleaned it as well. We found a little grime in one of the injectors. The engine is not seizing at this point.

The inlet filter is #48 for fuel pump and VST tank is #25, you drain it by disconnecting hose to bottom of fuel pump. How did you clean injectors?
