I purchased a used 7.5 mercury and I can not figure out how to lift motor out of water while attached to boat. I accomplished this once but I could not figure out how I did it. The previous owner had not used the motor in awhile and could not remember either.

Try shifting it in forward as it was originally designed to lock in neutral and reverse.

(I usually remove all of this as I want a motor to always be able to kick up. Except you have to watch running it in reverse when you do this)

Pull the motor off and watch the mechanism when you shift it.

On the starboard (right side) under the shift lever there is a plate with a tab sticking out from the engine. Grab the hand slot in the top rear of the engine cover, and pull up and forward on it. The engine will tip up and forward. With your right hand pull up on the tab on the plate on the side until you feel it slide into a slot. Release the motor and it will be locked in the up postition. This is the travel position, to lower pull up and forward using the handhold on the engine cover and push down on teh tab to unlock the plate.
Pull up on the tab to lock up, push down to lower. The plate has a "J" slot cut in it for the follower on the engine to track in and lock down.
