I pulled my boat out of storage. The port engine starts and runs. It is only running on 4 of 8 cylinders. Everyother spark plug lead coming off the distributor is dead. I cleaned the distributor cap. But there is still no spark to everyother sparkplug wire. Where do i start with troubleshooting? Any suggestions?

That sounds like the spark plug wires are not in the correct order on the cap to me. That would not happen while it was in storage though. Was it just running rough when you fired it up and then you cleaned the cap? and maybe put them on backwards?

I cleaned the cap with the plug wires intact in cap. There was minor corrossion inside the cap.

Weird --- but, if you are sure it is every other plug wire ---- I would look at a tack problem or module.

Re: 85 Mercruiser Ignition problem

We are going to go check everything over again in the morning. This sure has stumped alot of boat mechanics. I have gotten responses from change all the spark plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap and rotor. Because of my 13 hour work day a mechanic is meeting me at the boat at 6am before he starts his regular hours. He is pretty confident he will be able to diagnose the problem quickly. I'll let you all know what he finds. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
