Stuck in gear

I have a 2005 50 horse Merc. While fishing, I sarted the motor with the throttle open and pulled the lever back to neutral. The motor jumped into forward gear and is stuck there no matter what position the gear selector is in. It also starts in forward gear . Any suggestion as to what might be wrong. I can spin the prop clocl wise with a clicking noise freely. It will spin counterclock wise with effort. Again this is with the gear selector in any position. Thank for any help.

I couldn't stand it any longer. I drained the lowwer unit through a filter and found metal parts. So, I pulled the prop shaft out and found the forward gear had some small pieces out of gear theeth broken off. It didn't seem like enough to cause any real problems. The problem was the clutch pin had sheared so it couldn't shift. I will probably need to replace the clutch pin and the forward gear. Thanks for your reply and I hope this helps you out.
