I need to replace the transom Penta 270 on my 76 Lancer 23 with V8. It appears I have to support the engine to pull the transom. Yes?
Is there a good method?

Greatly appreciate a response.

Can't pull the motor. The center outside ring that is bolted to the flywheel housing is stuck.
Any solution short of bashing it to death?

There are 6 bolts holding that ring in. Between those 6 bolt holes are 3 holes that are threaded. Use 3 of the 6 bolts you took out to use as jack bolts to pop that ring loose from the flywheel cover.

Are you refering to the ring behind the upper gear box of the outdrive? If so there are threaded holes in the ring you screw bolts into to push the ring out, kinda like removing the two hole steering helmet pin.

Appears the jack screws are stripped. This was a salt water boat.

Thanks for the responses.
Some how I need to get that ring off.

Here we go. For the record.
I'll use my own terminalogy naming the parts. Correct me if you like.
Yes, you can take the transom off without removing the V8 engine.:p
Outdrive off
Steering arm and yoke off
Remove bolts from both exhaust manifolds.
Remove 4 bolts from transom exhaust manifold
Back off exhaust manifold from transom then you can get to the two lower
transom mounting bolts.
Place a short 1 ton jack under the engine bell housing and put a little pressure
on it with the jack.
Remove 6 bolts from ring mount that holds the transom to the engine bell
housing.
Install 3 of those bolts into 3 thread holes on the ring and jack the ring off.
Pull the transom.

OK, now in my case. :eek:Badly corroded mounting ring is stuck and the thread
holes are stripped.
Take a large tappered punch. Tip of punch should be 5/16. Place the punch
in the mounting holes and retracting holes and hit with hammer until the
holes in the ring split. Do this on all 9 holes.
To aid in pulling the ring. Take a come-a-long to the lower outdrive
latching bar and the back of your car. Put enough tension on the cable
where a tight rope walker could walk across it.

You could also try a few prayers to you higher power that one of the holes
your drivng the punch into cracks the ring and yippy its off.:D
I think I went through 5 holes before it let lose.

I was replacing the transom with a better one so I didn't care what happened
the the one on the boat.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

Wow, that sounds like quite an adventure.

the way I read it, I thought you were replacing the transum in the hull. But it sounds like your replacing the transum shield.

Either way, glad you got it apart. Were spoiled here in flyover county, no salt!!!

Good luck with the rest of the project.

Re: 76 Chris Craft Lancer 23 transom

Thanks Captmello for the correction. Yes transom shield.

Now to replace all the rubber.

Did I see you use some form of adhesive on all the rubber parts to seal
them? I have been worried about this. This is to big a job to end up with leaks.

What does everyone use?

Do you use RTV or something as extra precautions?
