Re: End of Season/Winter Purchase Decision
If you are buying from a private seller, I might change my tune a bit.
A boat I had a deposit on earlier this season was like this. The PO had bought it in March from a guy who had not really used the boat for a couple seasons, had it in dry storage.
The boat appeared to be well maintained. Don't know much about boats but I also believed that to be the case.
Anyway, in July, I come on the scene. The PO had never gotten around to putting this boat in the water.
We tried to start it on muffs. Nothing. Take it to the shop for a new battery. It starts. Do the river trial, seems fine.
Next day we try a second river trial. Boat won't start.
Our deal ended there.
He was good natured about the whole thing. Gave me the option of basically taking on a boat that had some issues or getting my money back.
I got my deposit back.
Funny thing, though, I got a call from him today. Now he wants to sell again. Said he had finally gotten all the kinks out. Hmmmm.....
The season's basically over now. So even if he has the boat up to par, it would have a dimished value to me.
For me the moral of that little anecdote is that i would really be uncomfortable buying a boat--especially from a private seller--unless I could do a sea trial.
I'd be awfully disappointed if I had bought off-season, waited for a few months for the good weather, thinking that on that first gorgeous day I can just turn the key and go.
Only to discover I have a myriad of problems once I put it in the water.
Having mentioned all of that, I wouldn't go so far as to say I wouldn't buy off-season, only that I'd exercise more than usual caution. And the deal would have to entail more than the usual inducements.
