Trim not functioning (alpha one)

Last night, I had my '87 Glassport out (Alpha One Merc). After sitting with the engine off and the radio and lights on for a while, I couldn't get it started. Also, it wouldn't trim up. Just a click.

I paddled in and placed a spare battery in, and it started right up. However the trim still won't go up. It clicks when I hit the switch to trim up or down but no action.

Any thoughts?

Also... If this is a major repair, is there any way to manually raise the outdrive, so I can actually get it out of the water? Thanks.

Re: Trim not functioning (alpha one)

The trim on my cousins boat would not work...only clicking due to a weak battery. The boat started but not enough charge to work the trim motor. Check your spare battery.

Also, you might want to check your soleniod(s) for the trim...not sure on your system if you have one for up and and one for down. You can jump your solenoid to get the drive up...if that is the problem.

Good luck, Ray

You need to check to see if voltage is actually getting to the PTT motor. If not, why not? Are the battery cables dirty or corroded? Is the up solenoid defective?

The only way I know to manually trim up the motor would be to loosen the nuts on the PT hoses at the pump. The PTT fluid will spray out as it is lifted. Expect the OD to be hard to lift.

Check your connections on the pump. Make sure there secure and clear of any cunk. Is it possible you were leaning up against the throttle and held the trim buttons down inenvertenly?...Music could of drowned out the trim noise and burned out the solenoid...also furthering your dead battery quicker.

Check these troubleshooting guides as well.

Does it click only when raising......or when putting it down as well?

If it only clicks going up.....
